Glimmer of hope for CD unity

By Barry Fox THE first cracks in the entertainment industry’s plan to launch two incompatible CD-like formats appeared last week. In one camp is DVD-Audio, which has the backing of Panasonic and Universal Studios. In the other, Sony and Philips are pushing Super Audio CD. Players using the new formats will go on sale in Europe and the US before Christmas. The split in the ranks has come from Philips. Instead of sticking with just the one new format, it will launch a machine that plays both SA-CD and DVD-Audio discs. This gives it the option of later adopting the most popular format without annoying existing users. Panasonic’s multichannel DVD-Audio players will cost $1500, while Sony is launching SA-CD as a $5000 stereo-only system—even though Philips says multichannel surround sound is a must for a next-generation system.
